On April 3, 2025, the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 better known as Martyn’s Law became an official piece of legislation. It’s a game-changer for every publicly accessible premise, moving counter-terrorism preparedness from a recommendation to a legal requirement.

What You Need to Know

The Govt has announced on 24th November 2024 its intention to introduce new legislation to protect women and girls from spiking.

This will include training thousands of staff working in the night-time economy on how to spot and tackle spiking. Piloted from December, the training will help equip staff with the skills they need to prevent incidents, support victims and help police collect evidence.

What is the Protect Duty?

The Protect Duty legislation, a response to the tragic 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack, aims to enhance security measures in public venues and events across the U.K. Initiated by Figen Murray OBE’s ‘Martyn’s Law’ campaign following the loss of her son, the legislation was confirmed in the May 2022 Queen’s Speech and had its first reading in Parliament on September 12, 2024. 

Since the introduction on the nation-wide lockdown and the closure of licensed venues, Shield Associates have been in consultation with NHS professionals and industry experts to try to identify the greatest threats and opportunities for licensed venues once the Lockdown restrictions are relaxed.

Moped enabled robberies in London are running at around 430 per week across the Capital with Islington, Camden and Westminster Boroughs suffering most of the reported crimes. The comedian Michael McIntyre was attacked in his car recently too.
